Overnight in Phnom Penh
Tour the city that lies at the confluence of two great rivers, The Mekong and the Tonle Sap. Start your whirlwind day with stops at the Royal Palace and the National Museum. Then walk to the top of Wat Phnom and have your fortune told. Next, visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which documents atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s – a chilling window into Cambodia’s violent past. Then, on a lighter note, shop for anything under the sun at Phnom Penh’s airy Central Market.

Travel 340km to the sleepy riverside town of Kratie, with its faded French architecture to see the rare and elusive pink Irrawaddy dolphins. Walk to the top of Phnom Sambok, with its small temple and take in a peaceful Mekong sunset.

Just across the water from Kratie is Koh Trong. Hop on a boat and make the short journey across for bit of cycling, and a peek into village life. If you’re lucky you might get the chance to see one of the rare Mekong mud turtles who inhabit the western shore.

Journey four hours to Kampong Cham, a town that’s steeped in myth and legends. See the 12th century Wat Nokor and take a short trip to the twin hills of Phnom Pros and Phnom Srey – meaning man and woman hills, for striking views. See what your destiny holds and visit one of the many fortune tellers and watch out for the roaming monkeys!

Travel about five hours today, passing through Kampong Thom, a former Khmer Rouge stronghold to arrive in Siem Reap late afternoon.

Be awestruck by Angkor Wat, marvel at the smiling faces of Bayon and the tree entwined Ta Prohm that featured in the movie Tomb Raider. You’ll also see the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of Leper King, the pyramid shaped Phimeanakas and watch the sunset from the top of Pre Rup. All the main highlight temples are covered so you won’t miss a thing!

See the exquisite pink sandstone temple of Banteay Srey, overflowing with small, delicate and very ornate carvings depicting classical Khmer art, and considered one of the best temples of all! Then it’s off for a quick look at Banteay Samre , which is modelled on Angkor Wat, before heading to the Tonle Sap Lake for cruise around the floating villages.

Set off to a rural village about an hour away from Siem Reap. Visit, a local non-profit organization employing village women who specialize in the traditional craft of mat weaving. Then get a hands-on experience as you immerse yourself into the daily life. Travel like a local in an ox cart, receive a blessing at a local monastery and participate in fishing, farming or animal husbandry. Funds from your tour go directly to the community to improve the lives of the people. This is feel good tourism at its best.

Drive about two hours to the sleepy town of Battambang with its crumbling French colonial architecture, fertile soil and rubies. See the superb views from Phnom Banan, an 11th century temple similar in style to Angkor Wat, and visit an ancient house. Then let the fun begin as you take a ride on the bamboo train – all aboard!

Spend the morning at Ek Phnom, a popular picnic and pilgrimage spot. Built in the 11th century the temple has some fine bas-reliefs and a lintel depicting the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Then it’s back to Siem Reap for the night.

Fly to Sihanoukville the premier beach destination of Cambodia, to soak up the sun and work on your tan. There are three main beach areas with long stretches of white sand and shallow waters perfect for swimming. Rent a boat for an island escape of swimming, fishing and snorkeling.

If flop and drop is not your thing then get out and about and explore the town. Sihanoukville has quite an interesting history. From the opening the first Angkor Beer brewery, to the Khmer Rouge battles, there is a story to tell.
