Delve deep in to the heart of southern Vietnam as you explore the Mekong Delta on two wheels. Traveling by bike, you get a unique perspective on this scenic area as you witness first hand the daily lives of the region’s inhabitants. This fertile area is where the mighty Mekong River approaches the sea and splits in to a network of hundreds of tributaries.
Inhabited largely by ethnic groups, the Mekong Delta has a rich diversity of traditional cultures living side by side. Vietnamese and Khmer ethnic people dominate the area, with a sizeable group of Chinese descendants. Evidence of these cultures is most evident in the architecture of the peoples’ houses and temples.
Leave the bustle of the big city behind as you depart from Ho Chi Minh City southwards to the Delta. From here, quiet laneways and dirt paths weave in and out of villages and fields, and the local form of transport changes from motorbikes to pedal bikes. Small children whiz by on their way to school, women pedal gracefully in their traditional ao dai dresses, and elderly vendors carry their groceries on the handlebars. Join the locals as you start your cycling journey in the heart of the Delta.
Setting out from Cai Lay, pedal to your homestay, where your gracious hosts welcome you in to a traditional Vietnamese house. The next day, travel by bike and local boat through the streams and islands of the Delta. Visit fruit orchards, rice fields, and Khmer villages on your way to Tra Vinh. Continue the next day on to Can Tho, the Delta’s biggest town, as you ride through more gorgeous scenery and traditional villages. On the final day, wind through the morning markets where the colors and smells excite the senses.
Get on yer bike and head to the Mekong Delta! The region’s myriad of orchards, rice fields, tiny villages, wooden bridges, canals, and local temples are all waiting to be explored by bike.

Tour itinerary
Leave the busy streets and buzzing city of Ho Chi Minh City behind and drive toward the Mekong Delta by road. Upon reaching Cai Lay, unpack the bikes for the short journey to Cai Be. Pedal along back roads approximately 1.5 hours to enjoy the scenic views. Stop for lunch on an island in the middle of the Mekong before continue biking to a local home stay. Living in a typical Vietnamese house, with airy rooms and outdoor kitchen, they welcome guests with gracious hospitality and the experience offers a true taste of Delta life. The rest of this afternoon is free to bike the dirt paths surrounding the home stay. Dinner will be prepared by the home stay hosts.
Overnight in a local home stay in Cai Be
Transfer: 2 hours
Cycling distance: up to 30 km
Difficulty: Easy
This morning, transfer by road to Vinh Long and embark on a boat journey out to one of the Mekong islands and bike along narrow country lanes, easy dirt tracks and trails. This is biking at its best: passing through tiny orchards, colorful riverside life, pedaling across innumerable wooden bridges and pausing to chat with welcoming villagers. Cross a narrow canal on a local sampan and reach the main ferry, traveling like locals across the expansive Co Chien River. The final stretch of the ride is along quite roads to the charming Khmer town of Tra Vinh. Arriving early this afternoon, there is plenty of time to explore side trails. Today’s journey is a great first impression of the ‘Heart of the Mekong’.

Today is a unique day of riding and sightseeing. Much of the area is populated by Khmer people. The regional architecture is interesting and there are many Khmer temples to stop and admire en route.
Cycle as much or as little as you like, as the support vehicle is never far away. The road is peaceful, narrow and very pretty all the way to Can Tho! Pedal to Ba Om Pond with its magnificent lotus flowers and observe local women having their future predicted in the small temple nearby. En route, visit a local Buddhist Temple, that is also a school, and learn about the life of the students. Arrive late this afternoon in Can Tho, the Mekong’s largest town located at the confluence of the Can Tho and Hau Giang Rivers.
Overnight in Can Tho
Transfer: 45 minutes
Cycling distance up to: 80 km
Difficulty: Medium
After enjoying an early breakfast, weave through the bustle of the teeming morning market and cycle along the banks of an active riverfront. Continue on a narrow paved road to Phong Dien floating market and absorb the sights of endless cottage industries, timber merchants, coconut shredders and small docks loading and unloading rice. The next stretch of the journey follows a narrow lane to explore the hidden backwaters of the Delta and the towns of O Mon or Binh Thuy. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Can Tho, checking out of the hotel and return to Ho Chi Minh City.
