Drive about an hour to the village of Ban Nongluang, where you will meet your local guide for an important safety briefing before you begin a hike through coffee plantations and vegetable gardens to a semi-evergreen forest.
Time to hit the trail! Start by winding downhill past ravines, waterfalls and flower-studded plateaus. Along the way, the guides will point out plants used in village kitchens or as herbal medicines. You will then cross a soaring forest walkway above a steep river valley.
Pass Tiger Waterfall and reach the larger Kamet Waterfall, where water plunges more than 100 metres into a densely forested basin. After a break for lunch, ride a nearby zip line through the trees!Settle for the night in the camp and have dinner at a restaurant nearby. Over dinner, swap stories from your exciting day! Then retire to tree houses perched about 10 metres above the forest floor. They are made of wood, bamboo and grass, in traditional Lao style, and can only be reached by a zip line. Nearby bathrooms have hot and cold water.
Awake to the sound of chirping birds and enjoy a simple, European-style breakfast. Then trek for about 30 minutes to another set of zip lines. The longest, at 400 metre is a supreme thrill! It also brings you close to the upper level of the forest. After a picnic lunch in the forest, head back to camp via the Red Rock Stream, where you’ll have plenty of time to relax and swim. Spend another night at the camp. By now you should be perfectly settled in your new forest home!
The last day of your adventure features a final round of tree-top escapades. After breakfast, trek uphill past old-growth trees that have so far escaped the logger’s chainsaw. The trail ends at a steep rock wall that is only by climbed using a steel cable attached to the rock with iron bolts.
This last activity – ascending the rock face – requires a slightly larger dose of courage and adrenaline. But don’t worry, it’s entirely safe and doable! After reaching the summit, one of the highest peaks you are rewarded with a stunning vista of forests and water falls. On clear days you can even see into neighbouring Thailand.
After a mountain-top lunch, hike for about 90 minutes on an easy trail to Ban Nongluang. A car will be waiting to return you to Pakse.
