Start your journey early with a two-hour drive from Vientiane to the small village of Ban Hatkhai, located at the gateway of Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area (PKK). From here, travel by truck to another village further into the park and toward Pha Xay village. Upon arrival, set off by foot through rice paddies and dirt tracks to get to a network of trails.

During your trek through the forest, your local orchid guide will explain how the orchid has become synonymous with beauty and mystery. You will walk toward a local waterfall where the orchid grows in abundance, and get the chance to take a dip in the water. Wander further along the winding trails and see the many other plants locals use for cooking and traditional medicines, and listen to your guide explain which herbs are used for certain illnesses.

Later, enjoy a picnic in a forest clearing before returning to Ban Hatkhai, a settlement of about 30 farming families that remains an example of traditional Lao village culture. Arrive back into Vientiane in the early evening.
